Statistics for Women in Construction: 2018

With the nationwide campaign to encourage women to join the industry, extensive research has been carried out. Below we have collated some statistics from reputable companies within the industry.

Only 14% of the construction industry is made up of women, leaving an enormous 86% of workers to be men. That is set to rise to 25% within in the next two years.

With the fact that 37% of new entrants into the industry are women that came from higher education, which is causing a domino effect and is inspiring others to join.

One of the key issues that prevented women from joining the industry was that 43% of organisations didn't monitor gender pay gaps in their organisations.

One in five companies has never employed a woman in a senior position, with half of all firms claiming they have never had a female manager in their business. However, 93% of all respondents said having a female manager would not affect their jobs, with 31% of women stating a female manager would improve their working environment.

So, what would encourage more women to join the industry? With 18% of the vote, equal pay played a factor, 15% would prefer to have flexible hours, 12% would like to see better childcare schemes in place, 18% want to have better career advice and 37% would like mentoring within the workplace.

Here at Marfleets Recruitment, our aim is to focus on increasing equality and bridging the gender gap across construction sites.
